Holly Bauer

Teaching Professor, Analytical Writing Program

What excites you most about joining our School of Arts and Humanities community?

“The students! While I have been teaching as a lecturer at UC San Diego for many years, first in the Warren College Writing Program and currently in the Analytical Writing Program, I am excited to take on a new role and continue to work with the energetic and inspiring students at UC San Diego.”

Why did you choose your field? Why should students consider studying the arts and humanities?

“From a young age, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. I had very inspiring high school and college English and literature teachers. The love of literature and writing I learned from them helped guide me to this path. The arts and humanities offer us so many meaningful ways to critically explore the world and our place in it.”

What research or project are you working on currently?

“I have spent the last year working on the fourth edition of my composition textbook ‘Food Matters,’ which will be published soon. The book offers students various ways to join the academic and cultural conversations about food culture and the ethics of food production and consumption.”

What’s your favorite class to teach and why?

“I enjoy teaching writing classes that focus on ethical dilemmas that involve science. Since we need both art and science to truly understand the world that surrounds us, I particularly enjoy teaching courses that explore the connections between the humanities and the sciences.”

What is something about yourself that is not typically included in your bio?

“I am a second-generation San Diegan. I love living so close to the mountains, the desert and the beaches and exploring all the natural beauty of the area.”
